Learning in Public Diary #2: New Instagram

Getting Used to Being Seen and Sharing More

This week, I’ve been learning a lot about Instagram and how to get people’s attention. It’s been a big change from just writing to actually talking to people and sharing what I know about cybersecurity in short videos and posts. I’ve got about 300 followers now and have put up almost six posts. Each one has something for people to download if they’re interested, which seems to really pull them in.

At first, it was pretty scary to put myself out there, but now it’s starting to feel really exciting, especially when people get excited about the cybersecurity tips I share. It feels good to see that people are finding it helpful, and I’m thinking about making some of this info available only if you sign up, but it’ll still be free.

Handling my email list is something I’m still trying to figure out. My newsletter, which talks about using technology to make life better, is turning more into a general tech advice thing. I want to add more tips for people who work in tech and like to tinker, showing how their interests can really make their life better.

I’m also thinking about changing my newsletter a bit to match some video scripts I want to make. I think it would be cool to have a special newsletter for people who are really into cybersecurity, and then maybe they could get the other general tech stuff too. I could talk about the top points in my newsletter on Twitch, which seems like a fun way to get more people to join in.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how important it is to make a space where people who create tech content can feel organized and inspired. Knowing who you’re talking to really helps make what you say hit home.

Since I’m doing this on my own, I get to dive into the really interesting parts of tech that aren’t just about keeping big companies safe. I get to talk about how tech affects our health, wealth, and relationships—stuff everyone really cares about.

But with more people noticing me, I’m also getting some mean comments, especially from guys who don’t think I look like what they expect a hacker to look like. It reminds me of a tough time when I tried to start a YouTube channel about crypto a few years ago and got so much hate that I just stopped. Now, though, when I get those kinds of comments, I take it as a sign that I’m actually doing something right. It shows that what I’m doing is making a difference, so I’ve started to think of those mean comments as a weird kind of compliment.

I’ve come a long way since then. I don’t need anyone else’s approval anymore, and seeing those mean comments just makes me more determined to keep going.

So, here’s where I’m at with my social media:

Big Insta: 61.6k
Small Insta: 320
TikTok: 350
LinkedIn: 744

Here’s to learning more, growing, and helping others feel empowered in the world of tech and cybersecurity!
